We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us, this experience of communion with the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. Our motive for writing is simply this: We want you to enjoy this, too. Your joy will double our joy! – 1John 1:3-4

Early Christian believers were convinced of the divinity of Jesus. But some took that emphasis too far and saw Jesus only in spiritual terms. So, this epistle focuses on the humanity of Jesus. Most people today agree that Jesus was human and we support his spiritual and ethical ideals. But we have difficulty accepting the gift of Jesus as the very presence of God. The short book known as 1 John focuses on experiencing the joy of experiencing Jesus as God embodied in human life and living an embodied faith.
