This photo taken by Evan Hale of Indiana Landmarks shows the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the oldest black congregations in Indianapolis. Located at 11th and Broadway and built in 1926, the original congregation dates back to the postCivil War period when some previously enslaved people moved to Indianapolis to begin a new life. The congregation served the community with worship services and also provided day time education for children.
