Happy Mother’s Day!!! From the establishment of Mother’s Day as a federal holiday in 1914 to the present day, the second Sunday in May has been set aside for Americans to recognize and celebrate the mothers and women in their families.

Mother’s Day has a special significance to many cultures and races. Many Native American tribes are matrilineal and celebrate mothers and Mother Earth throughout the year. Black communities recognize mothers and women as central to their organization of community. Central American peoples always celebrate Mother’s Day on May 10 whereas across Asia and the Pacific Islands a variety of dates are used.

Does your culture celebrate Mother’s Day in a particular way? See if you can find out, and take some time this Sunday – and throughout the year! – to celebrate the mothers and women in your own life!
