Like many cities, Indianapolis has parks, and green spaces, even some privately owned forests. Time outside in nature is beneficial for our physical and mental well being. Trees can also mitigate the effects of pollution and climate warming.
We have written about discrimination keeping people of color out of “desirable” neighborhoods and living in poorer, more polluted locations. However, this has the added effect of depriving many people of color of access to trees and open spaces.
There is research happening about climate change and these precious green places in Indiana. We may lose some of what we have, which would impact already underserved populations even more.
