Mental Wellness Defined
According to the World Health Organization, mental wellness is more than the absence of mental disorders. Mental wellness is the state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her community.
Mental wellness is important at every stage of life, according to the Pan American Health Organization. It is part of a holistic approach to our health, which includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.
The American Psychological Association states mental wellness is the foundation for emotions, thinking, communication, learning, resilience, hope and self-esteem. Spirituality is also an important component of an individual’s mental health. It is clear to see that mental wellness has a huge impact on our overall health and wellness.
