The New York Times recently reported on a new gene therapy treatment for Sickle Cell Disease, which affects an estimated 100,000 people in the United States. This disease causes red blood cells to develop an abnormal “C” shape, leading to a shortage of blood cells and blockages in the circulatory system. Many health issues can ensue including, physical pain, stroke, breathing problems etc.

Two companies have been approved to supply the gene therapy, a long and difficult process for each patient costing up to $3.1 million.

People who are eligible to receive treatment and have health insurance willing to cover the cost, would have hope of a healthier future.

Here are some Stories of People with Sickle Cell from the CDC.
