Years ago, children’s picture books primarily showed no children of color or caricatures of children of color; 1962 was the year the first children’s book with a black protagonist was published. Why might I care? Representation in books leads more children of color toward reading and benefits all children; book reading provides many benefits for the kids and all of society.
