Fact check: racism doesn’t just harm people of color. It also hurts white people. In the early 1900s the reborn Ku Klux Klan broadened its scope of hate, targeting not just Black people but also Catholics, Jews, immigrants, and those with white skin who tried to stand up for their neighbors. In the 1960s, public pools were drained so no one could use them rather than allow Black people to use them too. And still today racism harms white people in ways ranging from emotional and spiritual damage to limited economic gains and health care access.
Addressing systemic racism and removing barriers implemented decades or even centuries ago will benefit everyone. Being anti-racist not only helps people of color; it is an investment in a future which has better opportunities and outcomes for everyone, white people included.
