October 14 was Indigenous Peoples’ Day, recognizing the peoples who lived in these lands before the arrival of European colonizers.  (Although still officially Columbus Day, there is discussion on the recommended change.)  On the holiday this year came an announcement of a new national marine sanctuary.  What is so special about this one?  Members of the Northern Chumash Tribe nominated the sanctuary and will advise the government on management of the area.  Indigenous People are known for their focus as  stewards of environments.  What a lovely way to celebrate the holiday!
