The black population in the United States has been subject to both overt and covert voter suppression for as long as the US Constitution has recognized their right to vote starting in 1870. Some examples from the recent presidential election include the following, which all disproportionately affected people of color:

  • “4,776,706 voters were wrongly purged from voter rolls according to US Elections Assistance Commission data.” (Greg Palast, journalist) That information no longer appears on their website.
  • Voter fraud hunting Using technology to challenge the legality of individual votes has allowed an unprecedented number of challenges to votes legally cast. The NAACP of Georgia is particularly concerned about efforts to disenfranchise voters.
  • 3.24 million new registrations were rejected or not entered on the rolls in time to vote. US Elections Assistance Commission.
