In the 1960s Dine College was established as the first of many accredited Tribal Colleges and Universities located on or near tribal lands. Focused on tribal languages and culture in addition to a wide variety of academic content, these institutions offer lower tuition rates, are open to all, and have a positive impact on local economies.
Tribal Colleges and Universities have operated under the promises of treaties, the protection of legislation and in partnership with government organizations. They are now facing crises arising from recent Executive Orders. In particular, the revocation of EO 14049, which funds students and colleges; proposals to divert funds from public education; the elimination of equity programs thus reducing access to higher education for Native American students; changes in non-profit regulations weakening efforts, and of course the proposed changes to our postal service, which will adversely affect all rural populations including those living on Native American lands.
